I am a terrible pessimist with an optimistic streak, which means that I always expect the worst, but hope that I’m wrong. When the news broke a couple weeks ago that a complete version of Fritz Lang’s 1927 science fiction masterpiece Metropolis had been discovered, I immediately fell into a funk of assuming that it was a hoax. Happily, it is not. And although some of the initial buoyant joy has been slightly tempered by the reality that not everything is perfect about the find, I’m still heady with excitement.
